In the videos, we kōrero with those who are living and working within their hapū.

They share their whakaaro on what hapū-led futures could look like for the future of Ngāpuhi. Watch, listen, and reflect—how could this work for your hapū?

What is Ka Tātai Hono?

Let’s move forward together—for Ngāpuhi, for our tamariki and mokopuna!

Changing the way we operate

Ka Tātai Hono is about changing the way Te Rūnanga ā iwi o Ngāpuhi operates as an iwi organisation to deliver a better working system and benefits for our people.

Creating better outcomes

We want to improve how we connect and work together to create better outcomes for our people. Earlier this year, we travelled across the country to listen deeply to the needs and aspirations of our whānau. We heard many voices, and now it’s time to turn those words into action.

Frequently Asked Questions

For more details, check out our ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ at the link below or at the bottom of this page.

Ka Tātai Hono – the future of Ngāpuhi is in our hands.

Why Hapū Matter

Ngāpuhi is built upon the historical and reputational strength of our 130+ hapū—each with their own identity, whakapapa, and aspirations. While some hapū are actively working with their people, others are still finding their way.

When hapū are strong, they enable:

Deeper connections between whānau.

Deeper and more tangible connections and commitment to home, their physical and tangible place in the world – tūrangawaewae.

Stronger whakapapa ties that increase the potential for more relationships, collaboration, and connection.

A true sense of belonging and advocacy for every Ngāpuhi uri.

Why is it important to develop a new model of working representation?

To
transform

our Rūnanga to align with the needs and priorities of our hapū, marae and whānau today.

To
acknowledge

the place of our hapū and embody hapū rangatiratanga and hapū status as independent and interdependent authorities.

To
enable

Ngāpuhi problem-solving co-design engagement processes that support collective outcomes while developing enduring engagement models for iwi-wide issues.

To
succeed

Currently across the takiwā, there are inconsistent levels of meaningful and effective engagement.

Why would our people engage with the Rūnanga?

To
benefit

from the support, resources and investments the Rūnanga grows for the iwi.

To
realise

and enjoy our collective power and voice as the country’s largest iwi.

To
develop

a collective approach and representation of Ngāpuhi-wide positions on national and international issues.

To
have
your say

on kaupapa important to all of us.

Developing a new way of working

We are shaping a representation model that truly reflects Ngāpuhi – ensuring our people, voices, and aspirations are recognised and empowered.
We are hosting a series of hui to deepen our understanding, strengthen our connections, and shape the future of Ngāpuhi together.

Who are these hui for?

Ngāpuhi uri (members) to develop an authentic representation model that makes good sense and is fit for its purpose and genuinely represents us as a collective of uri, whānau and hapū.
Our goal is to provide opportunities and support to articulate the elements for a model of representation that suits us.

Focus Groups

We will be hosting focus groups to gather in-depth kōrero from our whānau about what a good representation model looks and feels like. These sessions will provide a space for open discussions and valuable insights to help shape our direction, from people we know are knowledgeable in this space.
If you would like us to come and listen to your ideas in a small focus group, let us know, we can set up an online kōrero with you.

Takiwā Hui

(Kanohi ki te Kanohi & online)

Takiwā Hui

Our Takiwā hui are an opportunity for Takiwa members and their wider communities to connect, discuss, and inform the development of the new model. Our Takiwa representatives know better than anyone what works well and what doesn’t. Your insights and work has been invaluable to improving our current model.
If there are any other Takiwā members who would like to talk with us, just get in touch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I share my thoughts? Will it really make a difference?

Your voice matters! This is your chance to help shape the future of Ngāpuhi representation. By sharing your whakaaro, you’re contributing to a model that truly reflects the needs, values, and aspirations of our whānau and hapū. This isn’t just a consultation, it’s a collective design process, led by us, for us.

There are several ways to make your voice heard:

  1. Complete the online survey – quick, accessible, and impactful. Every answer helps us understand what matters most to you.
  2. Attend a hui – kanohi ki te kanohi kōrero is a powerful way to engage and connect.
  3. Host your own hui – bring whānau together in your own space to gather, kōrero, and complete the survey together.
  4. Share our links through your social media platforms to get your Ngāpuhi whanaungaga involved – kōrero with us on Facebook or Instagram; your insights and reflections are always welcome.

Every action, big or small, helps shape our collective future.

Do I need to live in Ngāpuhi rohe to share my thoughts?

Not at all. If you whakapapa to Ngāpuhi, your voice matters. No matter where you live.

You can share your thoughts with us from anywhere by using our online survey.

Can tamariki and taitamariki get involved?

Āe, absolutely! Our taitamariki are our future, and their voice matters. While tamariki may kōrero alongside their whānau, we especially encourage taitamariki to share ideas, join hui, or even host their own kōrero with friends or kura groups. Check this link on ways you can get involved.

This kaupapa is about building a future that works for all generations, and that includes listening to our young people.

What is the Ngāpuhi rohe?

The Ngāpuhi rohe is our tribal homeland in Te Tai Tokerau, Northland. It stretches from Hokianga in the west, across to Whangaroa in the east, and down through places like Kaikohe, Mangakāhia, and Whangārei.

Our territory is where many of our hapū, marae, and wāhi tapu are based.  These are the places that carry our stories, our whakapapa, and our strength.

What is a hapū?

The term can be translated as pregnant and”sub-tribe” or “clan,” hapū refers to a group of people who share common ancestry (whakapapa) and are connected through descent from a founding ancestor.  We have over 100 identified hapū within the Ngāpuhi territory.

What is a takiwā, and what do they do?

A takiwā  (also spelled takiwaa) refers to a territorial boundary or district that defines the area over which a hapū (sub-tribe), group of hapū or iwi (tribe) holds mana i te whenua (customary authority and guardianship). It represents the geographical and spiritual domain of hapū/iwi, marked by geographical landmarks like rivers, mountains, or coastlines that those people care for, identify with and cherish.

Who are my takiwā representatives?

Each takiwā has its own elected representatives who kōrero on behalf of the hapū and whānau in their area.

If you’re not sure who your takiwā is or who your reps are, get in touch with us.

How will we know the feedback we have provided is being used to help co-design the representation model?

For all registered members we will send out updates via our online pānui, keep an eye on our social media pages and feel free to call us on 0800 NGAPUHI or (09) 401 5530
