Hapū Development

More than 130 Ngāpuhi marae, hapū, whenua and environmental groups have accessed this fund to develop and implement long-term sustainable plans and projects for the trusts and assets they manage.

The amount that can be applied for is $5000, and applicants may apply only once per financial year (1 July to 30 June).

There are five funding rounds each year closing on 6 February, 6 April, 6 June, 6 August and 6 October.


About the fund:
  • The fund is for cultural, social, environmental and economic development projects that have sustainable outcomes and long term benefits for Ngāpuhi hapū and marae communities.
  • For planning purposes, the fund may help kick-start or contribute to the development of project stages.
  • The fund is for projects that are current, or yet to begin. We do not fund projects in retrospect.
  • Applications are accepted from Ngāpuhi marae and hapū community groups who are established as a legal entity, and will deliver their projects within the Takiwā rohe of Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi-Ō-Ngāpuhi.

    The project reporting form is provided to ensure reports are informative and specific to the purposes in which funding was granted.

Minor Capital Works Funding

Remedial repair needed on your marae?  Several Ngāpuhi marae have accessed this fund to take care of repairs on their marae that cost less than $5000.

The amount that can be applied for is $5000, and applicants may apply only once per financial year (1 July to 30 June).

There are five funding rounds each year closing on 6 February, 6 April, 6 June, 6 August and 6 October.


About the fund:
  • The fund is strictly for remedial repairs to the marae for issues that prevent the marae from being used. Works must be remedial, under $5000 and have professional quotes.
  • The fund is for works that are current or yet to be carried out. We do not fund projects in retrospect.
  • Applications will only be received from Ngāpuhi marae situated within the Takiwā rohe o Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi-O-Ngāpuhi.

Major Marae Project Assistance Funding

Are you ‘completing’ a major marae development project? We may be able to help.  The amount that can be applied for is $20,000 and applicants may apply only once in any given year.

There are two funding rounds each year closing on 6 April and 6 October.

This fund is contestable, with a maximum of two (2) distributions to Ngāpuhi marae per financial year (1 July to 30 June).


About the fund:
  • Major Marae Project Assistance funding is for ‘completing’ major marae development projects only.
  • The fund is for end project stages that have not yet commenced. Applications for retrospective works will not be considered.
  • Successful funding recipients are subject to a 3-year stand down, before they may re-apply to this fund.
  • Applications will only be accepted from Ngāpuhi marae situated within the Takiwā rohe of Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi-Ō-Ngāpuhi.

Application Decision Process

  • All funding applications go before the Funding Committee (1-2 months after each funding round closes).
  • The Funding Committee will decide the outcome of all applications to the fund.
  • All applicants will receive written notification of the Funding Committee’s decision (within 5 working days of the decision being received).
  • The Committee’s decision is final, and no further correspondence will be entered into.

Sponsorship Funding

The Sponsorship Fund is a one off application where a group or organisation are participating in or organising a special event. To be eligible for this fund you must fulfill the following:

  • Apply for funding at least 15 working days BEFORE the event happens.
  • Members of your group or organisation must be registered with Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi-Ō-Ngāpuhi.
  • Provide in writing, a letter and profile outlining your event, include overall costs, and a photograph for the Ngāpuhi website (Ngāpuhi News). This can be as brief or as long as you wish.
  • Provide a letter of verification from your coach, teacher or organisation on letterhead, confirming your participation in this event
  • Provide your bank details on a pre-printed bank deposit slip, or a verified printout of your bank account details from your bank. Payment will be made by Direct Credit to your account.

The amount of the grant shall be a contribution towards the cost and not represent the total cost to the group.
At the discretion of the CEO, the grant may be made up of a combination of cash and Ngāpuhi tribal wear.
The MAXIMUM amount in total shall not exceed $1000 per group/team or organisation.
The event must have a major impact or contribution to Ngāpuhi.

A brief report is required once the event is completed. If a report is not submitted, you will not be eligible for the Sponsorship Fund in the future.

The Sponsorship Fund does not cover costs related to education fees, medical bills, housing, debt, business ventures or legal costs.

IMPORTANT! If you are successful in receiving funding:
a) you will not be eligible for further funding for 12 months
b) you agree to your profile and event being used as positive publicity for Ngāpuhi (you will be notified).

If your group/team or organisation does not attend the event, the funds must be returned to Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi-Ō-Ngāpuhi.


Sponsorship Funding

The Sponsorship Fund seeks to assist a group or organisation who are participating in or organising a special event.

In past years we have been able to support sports teams, cultural, community and whānau groups.

To apply for Sponsorship, you must be a registered Ngāpuhi tribal member, residing in NZ.  Not registered? You can apply to register.  You can also check and update your registration details.

Discretionary Funding

The Discretionary Fund is a one off application where an individual child/adult represents their region in a successful event or participates in a special event.

In past years we have been able to support Ngāpuhi individuals to participate and compete in sports teams, cultural, community and whānau groups.

Where there are more than five children/adults from the same team/club applying, they must apply for the Sponsorship Fund as a team/club/group.

To apply for Discretionary Funding, you must be a registered Ngāpuhi tribal member, residing in NZ.
