23 June 2022The Restoration of Mauri to Te Wairoro and Punakitere Awa in Kaikohe – written and supplied by Mane Tahere on behalf of the hapū mentioned in this article.
Thursday 2 June saw a group of local Hapū namely Ngati Tautahi, Te Uri o Hua, Te Matarahurahu, Ngai Takatoke, Ngāti Kura, Ngāti Whakaeke (Hapū) meet with Far North District Council (FNDC) for the signing of a terms of reference for the Kaikohe Waste Water Treatment Plant Working Group.
The hui was a culmination of months of hui and deliberations between the parties. After many hui, the Hapū were happy with the terms or reference and acknowledged this by each Hapū signing on the day.
This means that Hapū are at the FNDC decision table and can now work towards real solutions and options that suit Hapū.
Although Hapū recognise that this all but one step along the long journey towards restoring the mauri of our rivers, the Hapū are optimistic about this leading to real outcomes for better waste water treatment solutions for Kaikohe.
Now the hard work begins, say the Hapū, and hopes the relationship with FNDC gets better and genuine.
At this stage of the journey Hapū would like to acknowledge Hapū legal council Daniel Minhinnick from Russell McVeagh, Te Rūnanga-Ā-Iwi-Ō-Ngāpuhi and Far North District Council for getting to where we are now.
