R Tucker Thompson voyage a pathway to a Navy career

Kahupora is 14-years old and attends Kaikohe Christian School. She is an active member of the school kapahaka group and also plays basketball. She enjoys practical learning experiences and projects that involve hands-on learning. Kahupora is interested in becoming a medical aid in the Navy. When we saw the R Tucker Thompson (tall ship) youth development voyage around Northland advertised on facebook we saw it as an opportunity to support Kahupora’s career aspirations; the whānau encouraged her to apply.

Her application was successful and she embarked on her voyage last month. We would like to thank the Rūnanga for providing discretionary funding to assist Kahupora to go on the voyage. The experience of a lifetime benefited Kahupora – she learned about sailing, gained life and leadership skills and built her self-confidence.
